The NSW labour day long weekend has always been synonymous with traffic fatalities but this October, despite conducting almost 20,000 more breath tests, police charged 130 fewer people than this time last year. Is the drink driving message finally getting through?
This might come down to drivers being more cunning but the police have recorded over a 10% reduction in road fatalities in 2011.
Assistant Commissioner Hartley said, "We've significantly increased the number of breath tests we do each year. In 2005-06 we did about 3 million. Now we're doing about 4.7 million.
"We've also started targeting individual publicans - when someone dies after being at a particular pub or club we will call up the publican and say, 'did you know this person was drinking at your pub before they died?' "
He said the improved statistics were attributable to several factors including greater police presence.
Alcosense is dedicated to the, 'Don't Drink and Drive" motto and we're excited to see drivers becoming much more aware of the risks associated with drink driving.
For those who don't know their limit grab an Alcosense breathalyser!
