Holiday crack down begins

Northern Grampians Highway Patrol have adopted an absolute zero tolerance to all road offences this summer.

"Stay alert, stay sober, stay within the limit and stay alive - that's the message we're issuing to all road users this summer." Officer in charge of Northern Grampians Highway Patrol Sergeant Peter Hawkins said.

The Summer Stay road enforcement campaign was launched on Friday the 18th of November and Police will have a commanding presence across the regions roads. Motorists can expect to be breath-tested, speed checked and monitored by Police, 24 hours a day - 7 days a week!

Sergeant Hawkins commented, "We are disappointed that within the first week, 2 drivers tested positive for drugs and four for drink driving,

"While we will be focusing on drink driving we won't be ignoring speeding, mobile phone or seat belt offences."

Head of Road Policing Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said, "This is a critical time on our roads. As the weather warms up we find more people heading out for Christmas parties and social gatherings, with this comes a heightened risk of drink drivers on our roads. Drink drivers are significantly more likely to be involved in a road collision than other drivers."
