Breathalyser enforces RSA

Alice Springs is on the front foot, pushing to install breathalysers in their take-away liquor stores linked to its supermarkets.

"Customers are sometimes angry when they are refused service because they are drunk... the breathalyser machines would make the decision not to sell someone alcohol more objective. When we refuse service, as we are required to do under our licence, we get a number of people wanting to argue with us."

"So we figured the easiest thing to do was to put in the breath analysis machines to take the sting out of the argument. Let an individual or a neutral umpire, basically, make the decision."

Alcohol reform campaigners in Alice are also backing the proposal to install breathalysers in take-away liquor outlets.

Dr John Boffa of the People's Alcohol Action Coalition says, "It can be a very difficult judgement call for people working or serving alcohol to decide if someone is or is not intoxicated."

These take-away liquor outlets join a long list of Alcosense customers who have already taken advantage of breath analysis machines in their venue to "enforce" the responsible service of alcohol. Most of the time its easy enough to tell when someone's too drunk to serve them any more alcohol but when they start to kick up a drunken fuss get them to blow in to an Alcosense Breathalyser and they can "see" it's time to stop!
