Alcohol Policy - Why?
While there is no single way to address the problem of alcohol in the workplace, there are a number of control strategies that may be adopted. A constructive step for every employer is to develop a workplace alcohol policy, with supporting procedures, which address specific circumstances relating to the type of workplace.
There are a number of reasons why it is appropriate to develop a workplace alcohol policy.
- An employer may be found in breach of the general duty to provide a safe workplace if injury or harm is suffered as a result of alcohol
- Without a clear policy and supporting procedures it may be difficult to deal with situations where an employee is impaired by alcohol in the workplace.
- Having a clearly defined policy shows management commitment to a healthy and safe workplace
It may be good practice to develop and implement a policy even if alcohol does not pose a current risk at your workplace.
The introduction of testing needs to be clearly defined in your policy and communicated to all employees
These points need to be clearly defined when introducing testing:
- Set Blood Alcohol Limit
- Procedures for testing
- Procedures for managing a worker testing positive
- Follow up action and consequences from positive tests
If an employer uses, or intends to use, a breathalyser they should seek independent advice before purchasing. Breathalysers should be Australian Certified AS3547, reliable and accurate. To maintain this accuracy they need to be regularly calibrated, following manufacturer's guidelines.
To successfully introduce a new policy it may be necessary to take steps to overcome any anxiety the changes may precipitate. Throughout the development stages, employers and managers should convey the message that the business values its employees and is committed to responding to the issue of alcohol responsibly. The policy should clearly explain why an alcohol policy would benefit the workplace. Good communication and provision of accurate information will reduce anxiety for employees.
